The Construction Sector has always maintained its position as the locomotive sector of the countries with the added value and employment opportunities it provides to the economy. However, occupational accidents in the sector pose great problems for our country as in many countries of the world. According to the statistics of the Social Security Institution, the construction sector is one of the sectors with the highest number of occupational accidents in our country. Considering the loss of life due to occupational accidents, the sector ranks first among all sectors.
According to 2016 SGK data, 195 thousand 990 of the 1 million 749 thousand 240 workplaces in our country are construction workplaces. However, 13.7% of the workers in all sectors are employed in this sector. These data reveal the importance of the construction sector in terms of economy and employment.
As it is known, the construction industry, in addition to its positive economic effects, is unfortunately the industry where the most fatal work accidents are experienced. 15.6% of all occupational accidents that occurred in 2016 were experienced in the construction sector, and the sector ranks second among all sectors with this rate. When the fatal occupational accidents are examined, it is seen that 496 employees lost their lives in occupational accidents in construction and the sector is the field of activity in which the most deaths occur with a rate of 35.3%.
As it is known, it is a legal obligation to carry out health examinations of employees in workplaces in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 and related regulations.
